brown bear hunt

This was the largest brown bear either of these hunters had ever seen.

When people tell you to get in shape before a big-game hunt, this is why. Not only did these guys have to hike 6 miles through rugged backcountry to find their brown bear, but they had to pack it out, too.

Packing an animal out is no light task, either, especially when it’s something this massive.

To make matters even more difficult, this hunter made his shot right before last light. The two were faced with a difficult decision: pack it out in the dark, or try to wait until dawn?

Taking a page out of Hugh Glass’ book, these guys go ahead and skin the bear, but decide to use the fur to keep warm through the night.

This is bear hunting in its most primitive form. Congrats to these guys not only for the trophy brown bear, but also for thinking outside the box to get the job done.

I have to say, if I ever shot a bear like this, I’d want to pack it all out myself like that, too. It seemed like the shooter was carrying far more meat than the other hunter, but then again, I don’t know if you can call it your harvest if you don’t finish the job yourself.

This was true Alaskan wilderness, too. Even through the lens of a video camera, these guys seemed so small in those mountains. I can only imagine what it felt like to actually be there.

What’s on your all-time bucket list? Would a brown bear hunt make the cut? Regardless, I think we’d all include at least one hunt in Alaska, right?
