What’s the best size jig for crappies? It’s another one of those “kind of depends on situation” answers. In PA, a standard size for crappies might be considered as 2 inch to 2-1/2 inch baits. Very small body jigs in the 1 inch to 1-1/2 inch size can be useful for crappies in a negative mood. My buddy Ken Smith uses 1-1/4 inch Bobby Garland Crappie Baits‘ Itty Bit Swim’r in the middle of summer to catch big crappies when fishing is tough. When crappies are aggressively feeding, larger profile jigs will work. The good old 4-inch Galida’s Grubz has caught many crappies (typically larger ones) over the years when the bite is right. Bottom Line – carry a variety of body sizes in your crappie box. To learn more, I currently booking crappie trips to Pymatuning for June and early July.
