Buck Antler

This video provides a fascinating look at a deer antler amputation.

Hunters everywhere are in one of two camps when it comes to pen-raised deer. You either love them or hate them. But I think we can all agree, we want to see any penned animal treated humanely.

That is part of what makes this case so interesting. Keith Warren traveled to a Michigan deer farm in the summer where one buck had one side growing completely out of control.

This buck’s right antler has gotten so large, he couldn’t hold his head straight anymore. Keith helps these guys do an antler amputation. There is more to it than you might think and it’s actually quite interesting to watch.

While I am still not a fan of these facilities, I do have to applaud them for doing the right thing here. This buck was clearly in an unbelievable amount of discomfort prior to getting the antler removed.

We always knew blood was flowing through the antlers prior to them losing their velvet, but we didn’t realize just how much until we saw this video. Putting a tourniquet on antlers? That is something we never thought we’d see.

We’d like to thank Keith for uploading this video. We learned a lot of new things about antler and antler development we never knew before.
