Anyone whose beloved gun dog has had a run-in with a porcupine will attest to the danger they pose.
The Eastwood Animal Clinic Facebook page posted a video of a sedated dog being worked on by Dr. Bruce. The on-duty tech had to hold the dog steady so the veterinarian could begin the tedious work of removing the quills.
Although the dog’s breed isn’t stated, it looks like it might be a German shorthaired pointer, which are as terrific in the home as their are in the field. While there are some great products out there to keep a gun dog safe in the field, such as the SafeShoot system, owner diligence is the best way to keep a dog safe from such a terrible fate.

The SafeShoot system is designed to safely identify a dog or human as a non-target for a hunter. But, the only way to keep you and your dog safe from a porcupine might be the unusual method of training them to avoid one, which is an unproven technique to say the least.
Diligence and experience in the field are your best bets. Dogs and other pets can even encounter these prickly beasts at home in some parts of North America, so be alert.
In the event your animal does have this happen to them, get them to the vet as soon as possible, then prepare to care for them at home according to their instructions.
