This Mississippi deer hunter may look familiar.
Does the name Bertha Vickers ring a bell? If so, it’s probably because this isn’t the first time she’s made headlines for a successful hunt.
The 101-year-old hunter from Morgantown, Mississippi, made news when she shot a deer last year, just two weeks before here 100th birthday.
Now he’s back at it again, only this time, she managed to drop two does with one shot.
In an interview with The Clarion Ledger, she explained that she had three different opportunities to shoot a deer this season. However, her .243-caliber rifle wasn’t able to get the job done, so she decided to switch things up a bit.
“It’s a real good place to sit, but after I had bad luck, one of the boys brought me another gun,” Vickers said. “It’s a 7mm-08. I’d seen the gun shoot and knew it would hit.”
She would get another opportunity, but again come up empty-handed. Even with the change of rifles, Vickers found herself in muddy waters, as she wasn’t able to cock the gun. Her granddaughter was able to cock it, so she went ahead and shot the deer.
Then, her 101st birthday rolled around and she set up in her favorite blind, where she was adamant on harvesting a deer.
One walked out, but Vickers wasn’t crazy about it, so she remained patient.
“I decided to wait for a bigger one,” Vickers said. “Before long, a bigger doe came out and I shot. Then I saw two deer on the ground. It shot plum through both of them. They both dropped right there. They didn’t take another step. I knew it was back there, but I didn’t realize it was that close to her where it could get shot.”
Even if it was a complete accident, this hunter capped off another season with an exclamation point.
Her grandson cleans her deer for her, and she lets her grandchildren keep most of the meat.
“When you’re as old as I am, you naturally think each one could be your last one, but I’m going to go as long as I can,” Vickers said.
