Many die-hard catfish bait makers have their own special recipes they swear catch big whisker fish. Here’s one that includes WD-40 as one of the main ingredients.
Why buy catfish bait when you can make your own quickly and inexpensively? Just check your refrigerator, spice rack and tool shed for the ingredients.
Here’s the recipe offered by die-hard fisherman Chuck Porter of Sumter, S.C.
Ingredients
- Chicken thighs
- Liquid WD-40
- Garlic powder
Cut chicken thighs into thumb-size pieces and place in a plastic bowl. Pour liquid WD-40 over chicken and seal the bowl to let stand overnight. To give the bait a stronger odor, sprinkle the mixture liberally with garlic powder before sealing.
Porter got the idea of using WD-40 when fishing bass tournaments. The first time he sprayed plastic worms with the lubricant he won the tournament. When he tried it on catfish he started with cut up chicken breasts, but found that thigh meat holds on hooks better.
“I’ve caught all different species of catfish with it, but mostly blues and channel cats,” he said. “I usually have other baits out, too, like cut shad, but most times the WD-40 chicken outdoes the others.” – Pat Robertson
