I am always brain-storming blog ideas.  Sometimes I even write a few down before I forget them.  I was wondering what light-hearted thing to blog about today. . . but wait, Sunday is Mother’s Day!

I am betting in the past few weeks you like me have spent some time reflecting on family and good times past.  You are anxious for more good times ahead too, more time with family, but remembering helps right now.  I know I have shared some of these photos on my blog before, maybe recollected some of the stories too, but right now it seems appropriate to repeat them. . . .

Both of my grandmothers have been gone for quite some time now.  In fact my Grandma Roth passed when I was still young.  But I have memories!  Yes, some of those memories are of fishing with her.  I can remember being on the shores of Merritt Reservoir and Grandma Roth catching a fish, a big white bass as I recall.  I had to see, went rushing over, and got tangled in her line.  Grandma Roth never hesitated to correct us, and I got told to stay out of her way, but oh how I wanted to see her fish!  Wonder if she knew how much I love fish?

Loved her homemade maple logs too.  She made the best maple logs.

Here is a picture of my Grandma Roth, and my Mom, with a pike, probably an Elkhorn River pike:

It was not a big pike, but I am betting it fried up nice.

Coincidentally, I also have a photo of my Grandma Bauer with a pike:

That pike was a little bigger.  I am betting that fish was caught from Box Butte Reservoir.  It would have fried up nice too.

I can remember very early in my life camping and fishing with Grandma Bauer.  I can remember sitting outside the camper, watching rods, waiting for bites, and Grandma singing a little “ditty”:

Fishy, fishy in the brook

Come and bite on Daryl’s hook

Don’t know if that worked, but I still find myself reciting those lines sometimes, usually after the umpteenth hour of casting and not even seeing a muskie.  Or even a pike for that matter.

Got another photo of my Mom when she was young; this time holding a couple of bass.

Mom

Not only was my Mom catching big bass when she was young.  Notice the old casting reel she was using!  You pick up one of those old casting reels and try casting with it.

Or how about ice-fishing?  Does your Mom ice-fish?  Mine does, and she caught the biggest fish this day too:

I know we have lots of folks out fishing right now.  Without a doubt, done with “social distancing” and the other guidelines we have been given, spending time together fishing is one of the best things you can do!  And, it is good for you!  I do not know if you will have a chance to do that with your Mom this weekend, but if you do, I hope you take advantage of it.

At the least, don’t forget to spend some time remembering the good times spent with your Mom!

Happy Mother’s Day!
