The IGFA has recently received world record catches for a narrowbarred mackerel from South Africa, a golden mahseer from India, a mullet snapper from Panama, a blue marlin from Madeira, and a swordfish from New Zealand.
Schrieber’s Narrowbarred Mackerel – South African angler Tristan Schrieber – age 16 – caught this 35.8 kg (78 lb 14 oz) narrowbarred mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) on May 5th which may become the new Male Junior world record. Schrieber was fishing out of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa when the massive mackerel hit the live maasbanker (goggle eye/jack mackerel) he was slow-trolling behind the Wattu, captained by PJ Botha. Schrieber needed approximately 20 minutes to bring the fish to gaff on the 10 kg (20 lb) gear he was using. The current IGFA world record is 31.8 kg (70 lb 1 oz).
Iszatt’s Golden Mahseer – British angler Greg Iszatt potentially set the new All-Tackle world record for golden mahseer (Tor putitora) with this 29.93 kg (66 lb) fish that he caught on June 14th while fishing the Mahakali River in India. Iszatt was fishing the fast-moving river using trout for bait, and needed 25 minutes to land the massive mahseer. Once subdued, the fish was quickly documented, weighed in a sling, and released alive. The current IGFA world record is 19.96 kg (44 lb).
Carter’s Blue Marlin – American angler Sherrell Carter took advantage of the hot blue marlin bite in Madeira this season, catching this 161.47 kg (356 lb 0 oz) Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) on June 21st to qualify for the potential new women’s 6 kg (12 lb) line class world record. Carter bait-and-switched the blue, and with the help of Capt. Yoan Alcala’s boat handling skills, was able to bring the fish to leader in just five minutes. If approved, the catch will replace the current record of 158.75 kg (350 lb) that has stood since 1999.
Hampl’s Mullet Snapper – Costa Rican angler Kamila Hampl potentially set the new women’s 10 kg (20 lb) line class world record for mullet snapper (Lutjanus aratus) with this 6.52 kg (14 lb 6 oz) specimen she caught on June 23rd while fishing the Perlas Islands off the coast of Panama. Hampl needed only 5 minutes to subdue the snapper after it ate the live sardine she was fishing. If approved, the catch will replace the existing world record of 6.12 kg (13 lb 8 oz).
Yendell’s Swordfish – Kiwi angler Sam Yendell – age 16 – caught this incredible 212.4 kg (468 lb 3 oz) swordfish (Xiphas gladius) on July 8th while fishing off Tutukaka, New Zealand. Fishing with 60 kg (130 lb) gear, Yendell needed one hour to land the swordfish after it ate the squid he was using for bait. If approved, the broadbill will earn Yendell the new Male Junior world record, which currently stands at 177.6 kg (391 lb 8 oz).
