The shooting industry has never seen anything like the Xero S1.
Earlier this week, Garmin introduced a potentially revolutionary product to the shooting industry.
The Xero S1 Trapshooting Trainer is a near-real-time shotgun trainer that provides you with immediate feedback, including analytics on shot dynamics and shooting accuracy. It’s all done using radar technology and computer vision.
In a nutshell, instead of guessing where or how you’re missing clay targets out on the range, you can now know for sure.
“Shooting accuracy and performance have traditionally been determined by best-guesses, but not anymore,” said Dan Bartel, vice president of global consumer sales at Garmin. “The Xero S1 provides a new approach for trap shooters, both novice and seasoned, to better understand their strengths, weaknesses and natural biases, as well as their shooting equipment. This understanding helps lead to faster-improved shooting accuracy. Additionally, the S1’s upland training feature gives users the ability to practice upland situations in a controlled environment with friends.”
Using the free Xero app, shooters can pair their mobile devices to the Xero S1 to see immediate analysis after each shot. Made for American trap or upland shooting, the trainer tells users the distance from the center of the shot pattern to the center of the clay, regardless of whether it’s a hit or a miss. By doing this, it can measure the clay’s distance, shot position relative to the clay, and the reaction time of the shooter.
When shooters do connect, the trainer will determine the cleanness of the hit using the “break factor,” which is a unique scoring system that will add up the total number of shots for a thorough assessment.
Shooters can then go back and compare their different shot positions and launch angles and see their hit percentages, with details on exactly where they hit or missed.
To use the Xero S1, shooters just have to set up the portable device near where they’ll be shooting. They can then adjust for different variables, such as barrel length, choke, shot size and shot material. With the Xero S1, instead of just using your best judgement, you can actually quantify all of these different shooting factors by simply looking at your smartphone.
It operates in three trapshooting modes:
- Clay Practice: Logs data for shooting a standard round of trap or a custom practice session. Near-real-time data feedback about each shot is displayed while in this mode with complete performance details available after the round.
- Trap League Shoot: Logs data and tracks shooter’s station and score. Only the standard score is displayed during the round. Performance details are available after the round.
- Tournament Mode: Logs data and tracks shooter’s station, shots and scores but only for post-round analysis. All performance details, including scorekeeping, will be hidden during competition.
“I’m comfortable saying this is the most incredible piece of technology I have seen since I’ve been in the outdoor industry,” said Garmin marketing specialist Rehan Nana. That’s saying quite a bit.
