Machetes are simply too big to pack, which is why Gerber made one that folds down like a pocket knife.
Gerber has held its long-standing position atop the outdoor knife market for a multitude of reasons. For years, Gerber knives have offered consumers durability, versatility and a wide variety of options.
However, the market demands ingenuity, a theme the famed knife manufacturer has never failed to acknowledge.
And, Gerber stayed true to its proven approach at SHOT Show 2020 when it debuted the new Doubledown folding machete.
The concept seems long overdue, as weight and bulkiness have always limited machetes. Having the ability to pack a machete-style blade into a backpack is a luxury most hunters have never even considered.
“The Doubledown is the result of user-focused problem solving and great engineering,” said Product Manager Karrson Koivisto. “Gerber has successfully combined the functionality of a knife, machete and hatchet into a chassis that folds down to something the size of a standard flashlight. The folding and locking mechanisms are designed to provide the utmost in safety and durability.”
Built to serve as the ultimate backcountry tool, the Doubledown features a 6.75-inch blade made with 420HC steel. The formidable blade takes kindly to a sharpener, while also holding up against the toughest elements.
It also uses a weight-forward blueprint, a notched grip with forward jimping for safe, efficient use. The folding mechanism also uses Gerber’s QuadLock system, which keeps both the blade and the grip secure.
The knife is 15.4 inches when fully extended, giving outdoorsmen enough length to realistically hack through brush.
Made in Gerber’s factory in Portland, Oregon, the Doubledown will be available for purchase in June 2020 and will start at $120. It will come in three color options–silver/black, silver/green and black/black–and includes a MOLLE-compatible sheath for easy transport in your pack or on your belt.
