Congratulations to Elissa Title for winning the Go Wide Up Close Photography Assignment with the image, “Smeerenburg Glacier.”
“I just recently returned from a photographic journey through Svalbard,” explains Title. “From the incredible animal sightings to jaw-dropping landscapes to being truly remote, Svalbard holds an immeasurable amount of beauty and photographic opportunities. Consisting of islands between 74° and 81° north and 10° and 35° east, this archipelago is home to some of the most pristine wilderness I’ve ever encountered.
“The Polar Regions are great for experimentation in photography, and on this trip, I learned to really push myself. I have had my wide-angle lens for quite some time but never quite experimented with it like I did on this trip. As we approached Smeerenburg Glacier, there was ice drifting away from a recent calving. I began looking at the leading lines with the drifting pieces of ice and, to get a better angle, decided to lay down on the ship’s bow, sticking my camera out the small opening. For the most part, I was blindly shooting, occasionally glancing at the back of my camera screen to see how the shots were turning out. With the wide-angle lens, I was able to get a better sense of scale of the reflections of the mountain, the glacier and the retreating ice. Not long after I took this photograph, the current had already carried all the ice out to sea.”
