I have been watching the Head to Head Fishing Pro Walleye Series on Lake McConaughy all week. Two techniques have accounted for most fish. Both techniques are somewhat uniquely Nebraskan. In fact it could be argued that they have been perfected if not developed in Nebraska. Trolling has been one of the winning techniques, including trolling leadcore with big, heavy spinnerbaits–definitely a Nebraska technique. The other winning presentation has been vertical jigging with slab spoons, “slabbing”–another technique more popular in Nebraska than almost anywhere else.
Speaking of slabbing. I have noticed that most of the anglers fishing the tournament on McConaughy this week have been slabbing with spinning rods. Most of the slabbing I have done has been with casting gear. Quality casting reels with flipping switches are particularly good for slabbing. Maybe these guys from outta state have a better idea? Or, maybe they just ain’t from around here?
ICAST is the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades where new fishing products are introduced every year. This year’s convention was the last of July and I have been scanning a variety of new products since then. One caught my eye, and it may have been a “game-changer” for this weeks pro walleye anglers at McConaughy:
“Boom goes the dynamite!”
“Two big belly Kellies at the same time!”
Hope you can do that this weekend!
