This poaching repeat offender just doesn’t quite seem to get it.
You’d think after the first or second big-game poaching conviction, one would start to catch on and get smart. That’s certainly not the case in this wild story, though. Carl Sanborn of Barnet, Vermont, has been arrested for not one, not two, but 24 fish and wildlife crimes dating back to 1993. Over that period, he’s been fined a total of $6,800 and spent 81 days in jail for poaching activity (neither of which are an adequate punishment in my humble opinion).
Most recently, Sanborn was arrested for firing at a deer decoy set up by game wardens from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. This story, however, gets much worse.
As if it wasn’t bad enough to be a giant tool and a repeat poaching offender, this time Sanborn had his sons with him. In fact, his 21-year-old son, Jonathan, reportedly fired the incriminating shot. Jonathan now faces up to two years in prison and fines of $8,000 if convicted for poaching. Two other juveniles, 16 and 13 years old, were also in the vehicle.
Nearby officers engaged the group following the fired shot. The 16-year-old driver then proceeded to lead law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase as the group dumped hunting equipment from the vehicle. Officers recovered a bow and a rangefinder along the chase route.
Officials have charged the driver for the chase. They haven’t yet filed charges on the 13-year-old.
This story highlights the unfortunate reality taking place in our country today. New-hunter numbers are declining, and ethical standards seem to be following suit. I think I speak for the rest of us who attempt to abide by the laws and raise the next generation of ethical hunters without this kind of juvenile delinquency. You suck, Mr. Sanborn.
