Congratulations to Patricia Thomas for winning the recent The Green Scene photography assignment with the image, “The Forest Floor,” which was taken in Olympic National Park, Washington.
“The forest floor in the Pacific Northwest can come alive in the early spring with oxalis and ferns,” explains Thomas. “These delicate plants will soon be covered over as other native plants grow up and hide these intimate scenes. Photographing in the forest can create a challenge due to the immense visuals of moss, trees and plants. I struggle to find compositions in the larger forest scenes, so as I explore, I’m looking for the small and simple within the massive moss-filled forest. The variety and shades of green can overwhelm the senses; an effect I have grown to love.”
