Congratulations to Eric Grimm for winning the recent The Summer Scene photography assignment with his image, “Zion Afternoon.”
“Zion National Park is one of my favorite places to photograph,” explains Grimm. “Each time I’m in the park, it’s like I’m seeing it for the first time. The light and colors of the canyon are different with every visit. On this day, I decided to try and get away from the summer crowds and take the Kayenta trail that leads away from the Angels Landing trail and head up towards the Emerald Pools. The afternoon light was filtered by some wonderful cloud formations. About halfway up the trail, I found this wonderful composition that included the canyon walls, the Virgin River and the beautiful cloud formations in the sky. As the light on the floor of the canyon was in full shade and the sky was very bright, I knew I needed to blend a couple of images to get the right exposure. I slightly underexposed one image and slightly overexposed another to open up the shadows on the canyon floor. I then blended both images in Photoshop and made a couple of contrast adjustments.”
