Ever wonder exactly what goes into CWD testing?
Chronic wasting disease is a huge problem for whitetail herds around the country and wildlife agencies take this deadly neurological disorder very seriously.
Many hunters submit their harvested animals for testing. But have you ever wondered what happens after they take your deer head for testing? This video from the Michigan DNR shows there’s a lot more work involved than you might realize.
In Michigan, the fight against CWD has been going on for a while now, and the state established new carcass importation rules and containment zones this year. They also established a scientific panel to help battle the disease.
It may seem a little like overkill, but considering the fact scientists were able to observe the disease jumping the species barrier to monkeys this year, there’s a small chance humans may be able to contract the disease.
In fact, one pathologist recently recommended all deer and elk meat be tested before human consumption.
